Potentially Stale Tags

One or more tags in this container have names containing words like "old," "legacy," "backup," "deprecated," "temp," or "test." The names are operational signals from previous engineers that these tags are unfinished business. Kept around because someone was not sure they could be safely removed.

Why It Matters

Stale-named tags are a recognized governance anti-pattern. The name was chosen specifically to mark the tag for later cleanup, but "later" has not arrived. The risk is twofold. First, the tag may still be firing on production triggers, doing real work nobody is auditing. a "legacy" tag firing on All Pages can be sending data to an old analytics property nobody monitors anymore, including PII or commercial data that should not be flowing. Second, the tag adds container weight and audit friction even if it does nothing. The check is strict. it flags by name pattern only, since real behavior requires manual review. But every flagged tag deserves a decision: archive it or rename it.

How To Fix It

  1. AdLint's details list each flagged tag by name.
  2. For each tag, decide one of three actions. (a) If the tag is genuinely no longer needed, archive it (preserves history, reversible). (b) If the tag is still load-bearing, rename it to remove the stale terminology and add a description explaining its current role. (c) If you cannot tell, pause the tag (it stops firing but stays in the container) and watch for downstream alerts for one full reporting cycle. if no alerts fire, archive it.
  3. Document a "name lifecycle" convention so future tags get a sunset date in their description instead of "temp" in their name.

Example

Configuration
Stale-named tags:
  - "GA - OLD Pageview Tag" (still firing on All Pages)
  - "FB Pixel - Legacy" (paused)
  - "Hotjar Backup" (firing)

Decisions:
  - Archive the OLD GA tag (GA4 has replaced it)
  - Archive the Legacy FB Pixel (already paused, not needed)
  - Rename Hotjar Backup to "Hotjar - Production" if still load-bearing.
For Your Client Report

GTM tags with names suggesting outdated, temporary, or legacy status. Containing words like "old," "legacy," "backup," "deprecated," "temp," or "test." Per GTM workspace governance best practice, stale naming is an operational signal that the tag was marked for cleanup but never resolved. Each flagged tag deserves a decision: archive (if no longer needed), rename (if still load-bearing), or pause for one reporting cycle (if uncertain).
